Where is the Link Between Big Data and Its Effective Use in the Energy Industry?
We are firmly and fully now in the digital age. But that is really not enough. Digital data collection has made incredible strides over the last several years in every industry, and the data generated in the energy industry dwarfs many other industries, with seismic data processing, as one example, being one of the three top users of super-computing horsepower. The real issue though is making practical and pragmatic use of the data and here we are behind the curve or on the leading edge with little direction. Studies have shown that efficient organization and access to digital data can improve a person’s productivity dramatically, though to say it is in widespread use would be premature. Between the collection of the data and its then highest use is the area that is in the greatest need of development. Good answers are what is needed. Data processing has sped up dramatically with the continual evolution of computing power. The link between huge volumes of data, be it geoscience, facilities, projects or other, and the effective use of that data will be the “next big thing”.
